Data published on Trai’s website on Monday showed average download 4G speed on the network of Reliance Jio highest in February month at 16.48 megabit per second (mbps), pipping leading telco Bharti Airtel, which was rated as the fastest 4G network for 2016 by US-based Ookla’s Speedtest.
Average download speed on Jio’s network however went down from 17.42 mbps in January, as per Trai data.
Idea Cellular, India’s third largest telecom operator stood at second spot with 12.09mbps average download speed, followed by Bharti Airtel at 10.43 mbps download speed.
Vodafone India’s 4G network delivered average download speed of 7.933 mbps in February, down from 8.3 mbps in January.
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have been locking horns over the latter’s television commercial (TVC) that shows it as the fastest 4G network in India.
Acting on Reliance Jio’s complaint, the advertising watchdog had last week asked Bharti Airtel to remove or modify the television commercial by April 1. A committee of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) ruled that the “TVC and website advertisement contravened” ASCI rules.
Sunil Bharti Mittal-owned Bharti Airtel said it will file an appeal against the order. Airtel said Ookla, a global broadband tester, had certified it as the fastest network operator in India.
Jio told ASCI this was “misleading” and done in “malafide manner in collusion with” Ookla.
Mukesh Ambani-led Jio has also sent a legal notice to Ookla for “falsely” certifying Bharti Airtel, despite knowledge that its test results are fundamentally flawed and unreliable.
Data available on OpenSignal’s website separately showed Airtel as the fastest telecom operator in India in terms of 4G LTE speeds. OpenSignal’s website shows Airtel leading in most of the metro cities in India with average download speeds over 10 Mbps. Airtel is leading in cities including Ranchi, Dehradun Shillong, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Indore, Goa, New Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.
In cities including Shimla, Kochi and Lucknow, Reliance Jio is leading with average download speeds of over 14MBps.
