In the start of 2017, Amazon Canada had sparked a controversy by selling doormats with Indian flags printed on them. Although those were 3rd party products (By CafePress), Indians became furious and slammed Amazon for this action. Even Sushma Swaraj threatened to nullify visas of Amazon employees if those products weren’t removed from the site. Moreover, she demanded an apology from the Canadian branch.
It seems Sushma Swaraj’s threat wasn’t enough; now, we hear that Modi government took stern steps, although privately.
Reuters has seen a document which shows that the Modi government escalated the matter further, and asked Indian embassies in US and Canada to approach the senior management of Amazon. Without making the steps public, the government slammed Amazon in its own way.
The document says that higher authorities of Indian government approached Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon and forced him to conduct a global audit to make sure such things don’t happen again.
Along with doormats, the company also listed slippers with the emblem printed on them. Within 24 hours, all the products were removed by Amazon and an apology was rendered to the government.
After this action by the government, the in-house compliance units have been strengthened, so that products sold by 3rd party vendors can be monitored easily.
As per the document, Amazon has now made Indian laws that govern the use of the national flag and other emblems ‘An integral part of the global compliance process’.
This was a wonderful step by Modi government! What do you think? Feel free to share your views in our comments section below.
